The
sailing ship Symmetry departed from Leith Port in Edinburgh on May 22,1825
commanded by Captain Smith carrying about 220 colonists comprising 45
couples, 42 bachelors, 14 single women and 79 children. After stopping at
the Canary Islands, The Symmetry arrived at Buenos Aires on 8 August 1825. The
colonists set up in the area known today as Monte Grande in the Province of Buenos Aires under the
patronage of John and William Parish Robertson. The
colony failed in 1829 and the people moved to other places, therefore, by
1858 there were very few Scots left living in what today is Monte Grande. Information
about the Ship: Copper sheathed, 3 masted square rigged ship of 382 tons. Single main deck with beams. Drew 18 feet of water when loaded. Registered at Scarborough in 1823. Owned by Tindles. Classified A1. This is the only picture about the Symmetry.
The following remarkable poetic effusion, from the pen of “Tam o’ Stirling”, one of the Monte Grande settlers, was partly written at sea on board of the Symmetry and concluded after landing at Buenos Aires. Copyright Monica Loreto |
