3 pints (1.8 litres)
water
8 oz (225g) butter
4 lb (2kg) sugar
1lb (450g) sweetened condensed milk
Put the water and butter
into a deep pan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Stir in the
sugar and bring to the boil, stirring slowly all the time. When the mixture
is boiling, add the condensed milk. Simmer for 25 minutes, only stirring
occasionally to prevent sticking. Take off heat and add chosen flavouring
(vanilla, lemon, peppermint, or orange). Beat hard for 5 minutes and pour
into a greased tin. Leave for 5 minutes and mark into squares or bars. Cut
and remove when cold. |
