EDGAR (1097-1107)

He was born around 1074 and was the fourth son of Malcolm III and St. Margaret. When his father died in 1093, the English King William Rufus allowed him to stay in England, where he found shelter. In 1097 with the help of English troops, he defeated his uncle, Donald III and became king of Scotland.

In 1100 his sister Matilda married Henry I of England so he became the English king’s brother in law.

During Edgar’s reign, the King of Norway, Magnus Barelegs forced him to give up the Western Isles in exchange for his recognition as king of Scotland and Edgar accepted, therefore, Edgar was nicknamed “the Peaceable”. He died in Edinburgh Castle on 8th January 1107 and he was buried at Dunfermline Abbey. Since he never married, his brother Alexander I became King.
