Donald III (1093-94 / 1094- 1097)

Donald Bane was son of Duncan I and the younger brother of Malcolm III. He claimed the throne when Malcolm III and his son were killed in battle. Donald was deposed by his nephew Duncan II in 1094 but with the help of William II (Rufus of England) Donald was able to regain the throne soon after Duncan’s death.

In 1097, Malcolm III’s son Edgar invaded Scotland with the help of William II of England and Donald was defeated again. Apparently, he was kept prisoner until his death at Rescobie, Angus; other authors state that he died in Forfar and was buried in Iona; his son was pardoned and became a monk.
